Lighthouse, Xpress, Smart, and Core — these four distinct store formats are designed to provide MediaMarkt with a tailored approach to customer engagement, depending on the location. The company outlined its vision in July, aiming to evolve from a traditional product retailer into a customer-focused omnichannel service platform.

While three of the formats have been operational in Germany for some time, the rollout of the Smart stores marks the completion of the set. This development began with MediaMarkt’s acquisition of five leases from former Apple reseller Gravis. Four of these Smart stores opened on November 14 in Munich, Cologne, Leipzig, and Heidelberg, with a fifth store in Hamburg scheduled to open on December 16.

“Our philosophy is to have the right format in the right place. With our Smart stores, we are targeting tech-savvy customers who are out and about in the neighborhood,” explained Hubert Kluske, Managing Director Sales at MediaMarktSaturn Deutschland. “The focus is on services that can be used quickly and conveniently. In addition, our Smart stores act as collection and return points for online orders. With this format, we aim to promote the omnichannel experience and position ourselves as a trustworthy partner close to our customers.”

Smart stores are compact, with a maximum size of 400 square meters, offering a curated selection of products for immediate needs and spontaneous purchases. Through close integration with online services, customers gain access to a range of 365,000 products, which can be ordered directly from the store. Additionally, online orders can be picked up or returned at Smart store locations. MediaMarkt plans to connect all five stores to its instant delivery service via Uber, enabling delivery of available products to nearby addresses within 90 minutes.

Germany is the third country, after Italy and Spain, to feature all four MediaMarkt store formats. The company is heavily investing in optimizing its retail footprint and plans to expand this concept further.
